Take a Hike!

We have a new family activity that we "enjoy" on Sunday afternoons. We go hiking at Crowder's Mountain. Today was our second time.

Did I mention that one of us is really out of shape?

And doesn't like heights.

One of us was also perfectly happy to take the easy little Fern Trail, but nooooo. Everyone else insisted that we hike up Pinnacle Trail.

Pinnacle? Pinnacle? What's a pinnacle? That's what I was thinking all the way up.

It must mean killer cardio workout all the way up and jelly legs on the way down.

Tree hugger! One in every crowd!

Yikes! Does that sign say something about death?????

Thank goodness I had my strong, brave daughter so she could run off and leave me.

Whew! The end of the trail! 1.7 miles straight up! I found this tree to collapse on. Just a few more rocks to scale and we'll be at that pinnacle thingy.

The view from 1705 feet:
Don't let anybody fool you. It's crowded at the top. Apparently, everyone had the same idea today.

I might have enjoyed the view a whole lot more if people weren't letting their preschoolers explore the pinnacle WITHOUT AN ADULT BESIDE THEM! The parents didn't seem to mind, but I was frantic.

Of course, no challenge is complete without a treat at the end. You didn't think I did this for nothing did you? I can't think of anything better than looking out over the autumn colors of the county on a crisp, sunny afternoon while munching on a doughnut or six. I figure I burned a million calories on the way up that mountain anyway.

Yea, another hiking blog!!

It's just been such a gorgeous fall. It would be crazy not to be out enjoying it. And you can really take in a lot from such great heights (though I'm totally with you about the preschooler thing, which is why my face looks distraught in the pictures from our Maryland hike--and the preschooler WAS mine, though I wouldn't let her out of my sight!)

Glad you guys can spend so much time together. Fresh air, God's glorious colors--great way to keep the sanctity of the day and start your week off renewed!

Good Morning Bonita,

I have a huge smile on my face, what a wonderful family you have, did they all go along willingly? or were those Krispy Kreme's part of the deal? LOL, little kids unattended, hmmm, I would probably need CPR!. I left something on my blog for you if you have time, I know you're very busy. Have a blessed day!

What a huge smile I have this morning, a beautiful family you have Bonita :). Was your family willing participants or were the Krispy Kreme's part of the bargaining chip? Unattended tots, I would need CPR :). I know you're very busy but I've left a little meme for you if you have time :).

Have a blessed day,
Kathi :)

Bonita, Thanks for taking us along on your hike. I have a friend who regularly hikes up to that same pinnacle. She has invited me to go - I was worried I wasn't in shape, but your pics have convinced me it is worth the hike!! Have a blessed day with the Lord in His heights.

Hey, Bonita, thanks for your fun comments! I'm glad I convinced you on that room now that you see it, ha-ha. I do have the ability to see things in my head & have it all come together..guess that is a talent?!

Guess what? I have just found some pretty striped blue/yellow & white fabric that I'm going to make into real window treatments for my bathroom, SO that means the 2 plaid valances will be coming down soon. And I'm going to be sending both of them to YOU! No charge, since you already bought the other one, I want to do it for you. So I hope you find a good place to use all 3 now. It will probably be after Christmas before I take the others down, but I promise you, they are YOURS! Just wanted you to know.

Bonita --

The warning sign reminded me of my hike this summer on one of the Grandfather Mountain trails. It was a trail...how bad could it be? So off I went, not clothed appropriately for hiking. Not very far into my adventure, I saw a sign that bears had been seen along the trail, and that if we saw any bears, we should notify the ranger. (Never mind I had NO cell phone reception on the mountain!) I stopped and thought about it a minute, and went on hiking...rather blithely, until about 1/2 mile into the hike, when I heard footsteps (paws?) behind me and no one else around. I looked up and said, "Jesus, I need you right now!" I don't think I've EVER been so happy to see a dog in my entire life! The dog was with 3 other hiker types who WERE dressed appropriately for hiking! One of them actually stayed behind to help me over a big boulder in the trail. I made it to the overlook, more determined than ever when I saw a white-haired lady walking toward me on this very complex trail with a cane; she had already been to the overlook with two other ladies. (That's how I want to age!) I turned around and came back in record time, huffing and puffing all the way...but thankfully, no bears!
