Tonight I went on a date with a handsome, loving sixteen year old guy. I'm surprised my mother let me go since he just got his driver's license, but she's rather fond of this particular fella. I'm even more surprised that my husband was open to my dating someone else, but he actually encouraged me to do it! Tonight I had a date with my son.
Originally, he had planned to go to Smoky Bones with his best buddy, but his best buddy had to cancel. Since my son reeeally had his heart set on some baby back ribs, he decided that he still wanted to go there anyway. So, he asked me to go on a dinner date with him.
I was in shock. "You want me to go??? Just me??? You really want to spend your sixteenth birthday with your mother???"
Now I realize that I wasn't his first choice and it's no coincidence that I'm the person footing the bill, but seriously, have you ever heard of a sixteen year old boy in the United States of America in this day and age choosing to spend his sweet sixteen birthday on a date with his mother? I don't deserve any credit, but I'm really impressed with my boy!
We ate ribs and talked about his job and the Red Sox. We bantered back and forth with our American Idol critiques and just genuinely enjoyed one another's company.
And tonight as I sit watching the sun sink in the sky I treasure this evening in my heart. I will always remember it. Even when I'm old and gray I'll recall every detail, every word, and the youthful face of my son will be forever etched in my memory. I love you, my precious boy!
Lord, thank you for this son who is a joy and delight. And thank you, Father, that you knew my mother's heart had been through a lot of trauma this week with big milestone birthdays. What a tender, beautiful gift you gave me- a date with my son. You and I both know that all too soon other young ladies will gain his attention, but for this night, this one night, I got to be the center of all his affections just once more. I am forever grateful!

What a sweet tale. My son regularly takes me on dates, and has for a long time. Guys like these are rare and precious, and will someday make wonderful husbands who have learned how to care for a woman. Thanks for dropping by Miller Manor. I hope you come often!

Morning My Beloved Daughter,
Okay you have to stop writing blogs that make me cry! Reading your words sent your Mother's memory back to your 16th birthday and all the emotions that you have felt this week crept back into me just like it was yesterday. Of course because this good looking guy is so dear to my heart I share a lot of the diffculty of his release into manhood. I remember oh so well when his grandpa held him up to the fan and his little eyes were so feeled with amazement as gramps told him it was a helicopter. I remind you my precious that no matter how old you get you will always be Mom and Dad's little girl and that same feeling will also be yours toward your son and daughter. That is just how God intended it to be.
You are truly a Proverbs 31 woman and we thank God each day that you our daughter.
Love you,
Mom & Dad
Good morning Bonita, thank you for stopping by my blog. It is so nice to meet you. What a lovely post about spending one on one time with your son on his birthday! Trust me, you will look back and truly treasure this special time. My son is now married with a little son of his own and those treasured times are fewer and further between as he has different roles to fill. I treasure such special memories. Thank you for bringing back sweet yesterdays!

My almost 15-year old son came back from Spring Break with his grandparents with a nasty ear infection. He has drops to put in, so I helped him with them, and he just laid on the couch on his side to let them sink in. He had to read from "Ethan Frome" for his honors English class, and asked me to read to him.
At first I didn't think he was serious, but he was. He couldn't read well lying in that position.
It was an almost surreal experience to be sitting on my living room table in front of him, reading. When I finshed the chapter he said, "Wow mom. You read really good."
It was almost like he was little again, just for a few moments...
that is so sweet that he asked you to go to dinner w/him on his sweet 16th birthday! What a memory to treasure. Hey, we're Sox fans here :)
Awwwww, today we celebrated my middle daughter's 5th birthday...maybe I'm a mushy sentimental mommy, but your post made me cry. You give me hope that life with teenagers isn't all bad. :) You wanting to remember every word and treasure the night in your heart just makes me smile. We are so blessed to be mothers, aren't we?

My son turns 16 in just over a month. He hasn't taken me out for any dinners yet, but he does treat me to coffee from time to time and we sit and talk.
Your son sounds like a very special young man. You obviously are a special mom as well.
Blessings,
Joy
